One day the citizens of South Park wake up and find the internet is gone. When Randy hears there may still be some internet out in California, he packs up his family and heads west. We're a day late with our usual South Park episode review due to a backlog of stuff to do. Thankfully technology like online streaming and DVR's helped us get caught up. And we're grateful for that! We wouldn't know what to do if our Internet went out.South Park "Over Logging" takes a look at this apocalyptic thought and focuses on our addiction and reliance to the Internet and what happens when one day we wake up and it's all gone. The Marsh family notices something is wrong. Very wrong. They wake up one day and the Internet is gone!Everyone has needs. Randy needs his porn. Stan can't get online and his sister Shelly needs social network. As the families around South Park discover that they can't access the 'net they all start to panic.Starbucks with its free Internet is their last hope. A zombie-like trance hits the people as they search for the Internet. How can they check Drudge Report? Or their emails? How did people get the news before computers? The riotous clan tries the TV networks but find a dead end as they need Internet to communicate also. The reliance on computers has dumbed us all down to the archaic times before Google. Oh, the humanity! As the citizens try to decompress from the lack of the Internet we see how chaotic and desperate people become. Randy is sick and can't check WebMD. Shelly beats up on Stan because she can't check her online social network chat thing. So with the Internet dried up like the Great Plains during the Depression (think "Grapes of Wrath") we see the Marsh family head toward California in Black and White. This part of "Over Logging" is a slow and a little odd. We see a few minutes in B&W as the impact of people needing the 'Net and searching for a place with access consumes our society.Since we're huge tech geeks and reliant on the Internet we found this episode quite charming and insightful. The Internet boom of companies in years past has been compared to the Gold Rush Years as people tried to strike it rich on the faith of a little faith. It seems like the Internet not only consumes our free time but also our desire to communicate, work, and learn. It's a quick buck for some or a quick fix for others. Either way we find that our lives become intertwined and dependent more and more each day on technology so much that we sometimes forget the basics. Like trying to reboot the modem if your Internet is down. The Marsh Family finds Silicon Valley where refugee camps are gathering. The Internet is only available in small doses and is being rationed out. But don't worry. The Government is on the way to fix the problem. They send choppers with a staff to investigate. Deep in an underground cavern we see the Internet is a big-ass modem. Funny!!Randy Marsh needs the Internet to please himself with freaky fetish porn. He needs to see chicks barfing and fart fetish stuff to get happy. It has desensitized him from real-life just like the other refugees. He visits an Internet Pron Simulator inside a tent which is just a dude drawing pictures. Sick pictures, see below. We like how Matt and Trey pick out small factors like the Internet dependency and show how society crumbles with the smallest burp. Also, the interaction between Stan and Shelly as they struggle through the crisis help add a touch of class to "Over Logging."For us this episode hits home in that we know many, many people who are tied to their technology. The worst ones are email junkies and social networks addicts. There's a couple of people we have mentioned in the past that can't go more than a few minutes without it. Scary, but true. To make things worse the Government doesn't know how it all works and tried to negotiate with the modem with music like at the end of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind."Of course the simple solution is that Kyle figures out to reboot the modem. A simple solution to a simple problem. If you've ever asked a computer tech to fix your computer they usually tell you to reboot it.Randy finds a fix in the Red Cross trailer and goes to town. He's built up his 'frustrations' for weeks now and needs an outlet on the "net can provide. If you dare you can see the outcome by clicking the pic to the left. Gross but extremely funny. In the end Shelly meets the person she's addicted to online but can only talk to him online. They struggle to meet in the flesh which we have always found odd with social networking. It seems to take away the "human" aspect of socializing.Overall we dig "Over Logging" for it's nice "Grapes of Wrath" end-of-the-world take on technology. The episode lacks some laughs and definitely lacks character support. It's centered around the Marsh family but we only briefly see the other main characters. There's really no B-story like in episodes centered around Cartman or Butters . It was nice to see Shelly beating up on Stan again, though. In the end this episode was a little above average. It's a little predictable along the way and as we mentioned before a little light on laughs. This episode might have had more impact a few years back. However, if you know anyone addicted to the 'Net you'll get a kick out of "Over Logging." It's a nice swipe at one of our favorite addictions. We give "Over Logging" a 6/10.And don't forget you can watch this episode of South Park online free and legal. South Park Studios has uploaded this episode and almost all the years past for your enjoyment. 1 Comments: Eric says: 11:46 PM As usual, Parker and Stone score with their insightful commentary. The episode, however, was only decent. It could have been really good, except it was too caught up in mixed metaphors. The result was an episode bordering on strung-together gags rather than the usual plot-structured satire.
